Forum rules. Socializing feels like a chore by Hentgreid » Tue Mar 31, pm I have a question for you other socially anxious people out there. I have had this disorder for over two years.
It has improved, and I am feeling less anxious, but I have developed another problem: I lack desire for social relationships! Although I would like, and do have, friends I rarely feel like spending time with them.
Most of the time I must force myself to be social, and often it feels like I am wasting time that could be spent, for example, studying. So to my question: Is this a normal feeling among us, or is it due to something else? by Chucky » Tue Mar 31, pm Hi, I think that there is a reason why people and you are socially phobic.
I am socially phobic too, but it is because I have Asperger's Syndrome. So it's kind of a never-ending cycle. BOLANOS: And the worst part is better dating habits could actually be saving us from ourselves and our burnout. Here's Anne Helen Petersen from BuzzFeed again.
PETERSEN: The goal of dating is to find someone to spend part of your life with, but instead we're mired in the circle of continuous searching and never finding satisfaction that actually exacerbates our burnout instead of creating, you know, partnership, companionship that I think can really be a salve for burnout.
BOLANOS: So how do we fix it? Peterson recommends spending less time with your phone and more time out in the world. Quite frankly, maybe we'll all date better if we swipe a little less. Hanna Bolanos, NPR News, Washington.

I am socially phobic too, but it is because I have Asperger's Syndrome. Did you ever hear of this? I have only socialised once in the past year outside of college. There are people in my course who socialise a few times each week outside of college!
by Hentgreid » Wed Apr 01, am Yes, I have in fact considered many disorders; but none of them really apply to me. For some time I feared that I might have a personality disorder, like schizoid or avoidant. But I do not feel inferior to other people an avoidant criterion. Rather I feel above people in certain areas and below in others. Neither do I fit all the criteria for schizoid. And Aspergers syndrome does not fit either.
I easily empathize with people — just to mention something. If I see someone being mistreated I get a strong empathic response. And I do not have a narrow area of interest. I do however have some problems knowing how I should respond to certain events. So maybe I should read more on Aspergers, just in case I might have a milder form or something. If it is relevant, I was very talkative as a child. But my mother has told me that after prolonged socialization I needed some alone time to rejuvenate.
Sorry if this was too long. It is late here, and I am having some difficulties falling asleep. A question for you, Kevin, how do you read nonverbal cues, and how do you regard your empathic skills or whatever I should call it?
by Chucky » Wed Apr 01, pm Hentgreid, I simply don't read non-verbal cues in the first place. I mean, I just don't notice them when I'm talking to a person.
If I noticed them - or undertstood them - then I might be abetter conversationist. Plus, I am actually an empathic pesron in the same way that you are: If I see a person being mistreated, then I will feel sorry for them, and angry towards the person who is abusing them. However, why are you and I empathic in this way? In my case, I felt like everyone was against me in school and I basically had zero friends. Does this make sense to you?
You don't have to fit all of the criteria of a disorder in order to have it. by TheAnalyst » Fri Apr 03, am Yea I am sorry you are going through that but I know how you feel, ever since I've been in college I have been basically a nerd and not socialized much at all.
It is tough to make friends especially at this age and especially when you were picked on at times in high school so now I am careful about what I say and how much I reveal to people. My girlfriend is actually worse then me and can only talk to people online, in person with anyone other then me she is unable to talk to them.
I think we are both really introverted and it's kind of bad I guess. Check Mental Health Matters. Mental Health Dictionary.
